Privacy Policy — Speedometer
Last updated: October 19, 2025
Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Speedometer ("we", "our", "us") collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you use our mobile application and web pages (the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
Information We Collect
We collect information in the following categories:
- Location Data (Required for core features) — Precise real-time location data (GPS coordinates and derived speed) while you use the speed/route tracking features. This is required to measure and display vehicle speed and to provide trip tracking.
- Device & Usage Data — Device model, operating system, app version, crash reports, timestamps, and anonymized usage metrics (how you use the app) to improve performance and reliability.
- Local Storage — The app may store small amounts of data locally on the device (cached route data, settings, user preferences).
- Optional Data — If you choose to provide an email, feedback or support request, we will store that information to respond and help improve the Service.
Note: We do not require user accounts to use the core speedometer features. Location data used for real-time speed calculation is processed on the device whenever possible; however, some aggregated or anonymized location-related metrics might be sent to third-party analytics or crash-reporting services (see "Third-Party Services").
How We Use Your Information
- Provide & operate the Service: measure and display speed, calculate distances, show trip summaries, and enable features that depend on location.
- Analytics & performance: analyze app usage, improve features, and diagnose crashes or errors.
- Support: respond to feedback, bug reports, and support requests.
- Legal & safety: comply with legal obligations and protect the rights and safety of our users and the Service.
Location Data — Important Details
Why we request location: the core functionality—showing current vehicle speed—requires access to the device's location (GPS).
When location is collected: only when you are actively using features that require it and after you grant explicit permission. You can revoke permission at any time in your device settings.
On-device processing: whenever feasible we calculate speed on the device and avoid sending precise location off the device. If any location or route summaries are uploaded (for backup or cloud features, if added), we will ask for explicit consent.
Third-Party Services
We may use third-party providers for analytics, crash reporting, and cloud services. These providers may collect technical and usage information about your device and the app (for example, crash logs, anonymized identifiers, and aggregated usage statistics). Examples of categories of providers:
- Crash reporting (e.g., Sentry, Bugsnag)
- Analytics (e.g., Firebase Analytics, Amplitude)
- Maps or location helper services (only if you enable map features)
If you want a list of the exact vendors we are using, please contact us at the address below and we will provide the names and links to their privacy documents.
Cookies & Local Storage
Our web pages and PWA (if used) may use cookies or local storage for basic settings and session state. Cookies are not used to store precise location—location used by the mobile app is handled through the device's location APIs.
Data Sharing & Disclosure
We will not sell your personal information. We may share information in the following limited situations:
- Service Providers: vendors who perform services on our behalf under contract (analytics, hosting, crash reporting).
- Legal Requirements: to comply with laws, respond to lawful requests, or protect users or property.
- Business Transfers: in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (with notice to users where required).
Data Retention
We retain data only as long as necessary to provide the Service, meet legal obligations, and improve the app. Local storage and caches are retained on the device until the user clears them or uninstalls the app. Server-side logs (if any) are retained in accordance with our retention policies and applicable law.
Security
We use commercially reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures to protect information. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure—if you believe your data has been compromised, contact us immediately.
Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your personal data. To exercise your rights, contact us at the address below. We will respond in accordance with applicable law.
Children
The Service is not intended for children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete that information.
International Users
The Service is operated from India. If you are located outside India, please note that information we collect may be transferred to, stored, and processed in India or other countries. By using the Service you consent to such transfers in accordance with this Policy.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new policy with a revised "Last updated" date. For material changes, we will provide a more prominent notice.
